Martin And Lewis – Together Forever On DVD

It was the long-awaited reunion that millions of fans had hoped for—on March 1, 1960, the comedy duo of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, estranged since 1956, reunited on the stage of the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas! Both were there performing separate acts. Can you imagine the audience excitement when, at the end of Martin’s closing act, he brought his former partner on stage and introduced him? For 15 minutes, the pair joked a bit then sang a duet. But sadly, the brief reunion did not signal a permanent reteaming of their talents.

In the late 40s and early 50s, Martin and Lewis were the hottest act in America, but ultimately, their friendship would not survive the pace and pressure of the business. While critics praised Lewis as the real talent of the team, Martin found himself playing second fiddle to Lewis’ antics. Martin reached his breaking point when Look Magazine gave the team a cover photo but cropped him completely out of the picture. Offended, Martin finished out his contract and left the act in 1956.

After the split, Martin and Lewis enjoyed separate successes. Dean Martin had a singing career, the Matt Helm movie series, and an immensely popular variety show; and we’re all familiar with Jerry Lewis’ roles in comedies, and as long-time host of the annual MDA Telethon. After their 1960 reunion on the stage of The Sands, the two crossed paths publicly just briefly in 1976 and again in 1987. Finally, in 1989, the two appeared together on-stage for the last time at Bally’s Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Dean’s 72nd birthday. Jerry honored him with a birthday cake and a shower of praise, and quipped “Why we broke up, I’ll never know.”

Their partnership brought us some of the most memorable comedy ever. Although the days of a Martin & Lewis reunion are long since passed, you can relive the best moments from their heyday through these two compilations.

A KISS Is Still A KISS… Going Strong Since 1973

It was 1973 in New York City. The crowd was on its feet, in awe of the four figures prancing around in elaborate makeup, studded leather outfits, high-heeled boots, flamboyant hairstyles… The runway during Fashion Week? Actually, it was one of rock & roll’s most unique groups: KISS—the likes of which, up until then, the world had not seen.

In their mid-to-late 70's heyday, the music of KISS was overshadowed by their live shows which featured state-of-the-art lighting and thrilling pyrotechnics. Fans were hungry for everything they offered, more than willing to “rock & roll all night, and party every day!” By 1980, the band had released their 8th studio album, Unmasked, the last album that would feature the original lineup of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss, until Psycho Circus in 1998. Even though the band has seen many personnel changes over the past 3 decades and even abandoned their trademark makeup for a few years, they’ve managed to retain a devoted core fan base, while garnering new generations of fans as well. As evidence of their continued appeal, KISS is still touring, and is currently in the middle of their 2009-2010 Sonic Boom tour across North American and Europe.

To date, the band has been awarded 24 gold albums in the USA, and their worldwide sales have exceeded 100 million in DVD sales alone. Late last year, KISS was nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a tribute to their staying power in the often-fickle music industry. Being huge fans ourselves, we’ve collected some really great items that we know you’ll love, with more on the way!

You’re Never Too Old For Tinker Bell’s Magic!

On February 5, 1953, Disney’s® Peter Pan opened at the Roxy Theater in New York. An adaptation of a well-loved book and stage play by J.M. Barrie, it’s the quintessential childhood fantasy of never having to grow up and join the harsh adult world. Naturally this sounds great to kids, but it appeals to many adults too—case in point: Walt Disney himself, a grown man who managed to never let adulthood steal away his sense of child-like wonder.

My favorite character from the movie was, and still is, Tinker Bell®, the tiny sprite with bells for a voice, known for flitting about and leaving a trail of pixie dust in her wake. I like that she wasn’t one dimensional, all sweetness and shimmering light—in fact, I love that she was a bit naughty and prone to pouting in order to get her way! But upon her debut, a few movie critics didn’t share my opinion. They complained that the pixie’s sassy attitude and exaggerated hourglass figure were “too suggestive and a bit vulgar!”

Nevertheless, Tinker Bell went on to become an icon, as the Disney animators and writers made sure she evolved into a very lovable little fairy, still a bit mischievous, but full of whimsy and charm. As a result, she and her ever-present pixie dust have been the symbol of “the magic of Disney” for over half a century.

As far as growing up goes, well, it did happen, but we can still find plenty of our favorite memories of childhood right here in Betty’s Attic!

Why We Still Love Lucy!

In “Lucy Goes To The Hospital,” Episode #56 of I Love Lucy™, the Ricardos become parents. When the episode aired on January 19, 1953, it was the most watched television program ever, beating out Queen Elizabeth’s coronation and President Eisenhower’s inauguration. The hilarious events leading up to Little Ricky’s birth are the kind of laughs that made I Love Lucy such a memorable program then, and one of our favorite television memories today.

Who could forget Lucy and Ethel’s foray into the working world in Episode #39, “Job Switching?” Or when Lucy played pitchwoman in Episode #31 and got tipsy on Vitameatavegamin? And no matter what the foursome bickered about, we always knew they would patch things up at the end.

The last original episode of I Love Lucy was broadcast on May 6, 1957. Fifty-three years later, Lucy is never far from our hearts. We never tire of watching the kooky redhead worm her herself in and out of every preposterous situation and improbable predicament imaginable, time and time again. The enduring appeal of her shows is why she’ll always be the Queen of Comedy here at Betty’s Attic. Long may she reign!

Reality Shows? No Thanks—Give Me Variety Shows!

Flipping channels the other day, one thing became abundantly clear—there are too many reality TV shows out there! People trying to survive living on island jungles; people vying to be the next big restaurant chef, runway model, clothing designer, home decorator, singer or entertainer; people trying to catch cheating spouses, kick drug addictions, lose weight, find their perfect mate, plan their perfect wedding…and the list goes on!

When I watch TV, I don’t want to be caught up in anyone else’s real-life drama; I don’t want to be sucked into anyone else’s real-life problems--I want escapism!

The variety shows I remember transported me right out of reality and directly into fantasy and fun. Didn’t you love Jack Benny’s exasperated “Well!” and Ed Sullivan’s fabulous Broadway guests? Red Skelton’s Clem Kadiddlehopper and Freddy the Freeloader? Martin & Lewis’ slapstick comedy, and the over-the-top antics of British scamp Benny Hill? Goldie Hawn’s painted sock-it-to-me girl and Cher’s leopard-clad laundro-mat diva Laverne? Every week, we tuned in to see our favorite hosts and the characters we loved, and we didn’t have to worry that they’d been voted off or eliminated!

You can keep those reality shows; I’ll take the good, old-fashioned entertainment of variety shows any day!

The Radio City Rockettes—A Timeless Tradition

On December 28, 1932, Radio City Music Hall opened its doors in Rockefeller Center. Since then, more than 300 million people have enjoyed stage shows, concerts, movies, and other special events at this world-famous venue, the largest indoor theater in the world.

The Music Hall is perhaps best known as the home to the legendary precision dance company, The Rockettes. They have been performing to sell-out crowds since their debut in 1933. Along with being famous for their high-kicking chorus line, their 8-week Christmas spectacular has become a magnificent tradition, performed in five shows a day, seven days a week, for over 75 years! This year’s breath-taking show includes “The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers,” first performed in 1933; “The Nutcracker,” and a living Nativity. With its extravaganza of snowflakes and streamers, carols and hymns, and a live orchestra that magically appears from beneath the stage, the Rockettes provide grand entertainment with timeless appeal.

If you are one of the lucky (crazy?) people who celebrate New Year’s Eve in New York City, catching a Rockettes performance is a great way to ring in the new year! If you can’t make it to the Big Apple, we suggest enjoying a version of the show at home with our Radio City Christmas Spectacular on DVD. Or, usher in 2010 by piecing together a 4D version of “the city that never sleeps!”

Who Doesn’t Love A White Christmas?

For kids, a fresh-fallen blanket of snow means making snowmen, snow forts & snow angels, having snowball fights and hoping for a day off from school. For most adults, it means shoveling the front walk, treacherous driving, and hoping the pipes in the house won’t freeze! Even if you’re one of those people who left snowy northern winters behind years ago in favor of palm trees and balmy breezes, you probably miss the snow on Christmas.

What is it about Christmas that makes us forget all about the downside of nature’s chilliest delivery and appreciate the beauty it brings—if only for one day? When Bing Crosby first crooned the Irving Berlin song “White Christmas” in the movie Holiday Inn back in 1941, it was an instant hit, staying on the charts for 11 weeks. The following year, it was awarded the Oscar for Best Song, going on to inspire a movie by the same name in 1954, and remains the best-selling Christmas song of all time. The nostalgic lyrics bring to mind the best of times spent with cherished friends and loved ones, and all the wonderful things that make our holidays merry and bright!

Whether you spend this Christmas frolicking in the white frosty snow, catching rays on a white sandy beach--or someplace in between--we at Betty’s Attic hope that after the presents are unwrapped and the cookies are gone, your memories are indeed the most precious of all the gifts you receive. Atlanta Went Wild For Gone With The Wind in 1939

In 1939 in Atlanta, Georgia, the current events of World War II were overshadowed for 3 days by the star-studded premiere of the Civil War epic, Gone With The Wind. Preceded by months of hype, the excitement peaked with the arrival of the major players and various entourage. The Governor declared a 3-day holiday and asked residents to dress in Civil War-period clothing as the city reveled in dozens of gala events leading up to the highly-anticipated premiere at Loew’s Grand Theater.

For the Dec. 15^th premiere, a Greek column facade resembling Tara was placed in front of the theater. Spotlights swept the sky above the 300,000 spectators lining the streets, as star after star stepped out of car after car, greeted by rousing cheers from the crowd. Special guests of honor included a group of Confederate veterans, as well as the book’s Pulitzer Prize-winning hometown author, Margaret Mitchell.
Four and a half hours later, the movie and most of the festivities were over, but the Oscar-winning epic would continue to thrill fans and claim its place in movie history. Adjusted for inflation, Gone With The Wind remains the number one top-grossing box office film of all time!

Gone With The Wind movie enthusiasts and Civil War buffs alike will enjoy adding these items to their collections.

We’ll Never Tire of These Holiday Movie Favorites!

Every year, one publication after another comes up with a list of the best holiday movies and programs. I’ve gone through at least a half-dozen of these lists, searching for the most popular holiday favorites, making a note of the films that popped up on almost everyone’s list. By my count, there are at least eight (and arguably many more) that we look forward to viewing year after year. I’ve listed them in no particular order, with the reasons we love watching them over and over. Which ones are your favorites?

A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) – Charles M. Schulz’s animated PEANUTS special reminds us of the true meaning of the season.
A Christmas Carol – the 1984 version starring George C. Scott was among the best of many versions produced (also the updated Scrooged starring Bill Murray).
White Christmas (1954) – a sequel to 1942’s Holiday Inn, this Irving Berlin song & dance film features Bing Crosby and a talented cast, plus the beloved title song.
Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964) – one of many Rankin Bass stop-motion claymation holiday specials, including A Year Without Santa Claus, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Frosty the Snowman and The Little Drummer Boy.
How The Grinch Stole Christmas – most notable is the original with Boris Karloff from 1966, but Jim Carrey’s version of the mean green one in 2000 was magnificent.
Miracle on 34th Street – (1947) with a young Natalie Wood and an Oscar-winning portrayal of Santa Claus by Edmund Gwenn.
It’s A Wonderful Life – Frank Capra’s classic starring Jimmy Stewart remains as entertaining and inspirational as it was back in 1946.
A Christmas Story (1983) – a heart-warming and humorous recollection of Christmas past as seen through the eyes of young Ralphie.

Many of these movies have spawned collectibles and clothing, and we at Betty’s Attic are happy to be able to offer them to you. Pick your favorites to brighten your holidays!

Thanks To Our Military Veterans—American Heroes All

The country’s annual observance of Veterans’ Day is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by our military and what it means to us every single day. Although well-deserved, it almost seems a shame that only one 24-hour period has been set aside to honor these heroic men and women. So, what else can you do?

Well, here are several ways you can convey your appreciation for the men and women of our armed forces anytime—not just on November 11th.

Thank those you see in military uniform—at the airport, at the mall, in a restaurant. Offer to buy them a cup of coffee, a drink, pay for their dessert. Call a vet you know, and offer to mow grass, walk pets, buy groceries, or ask them what they need. Help support the family of an enlisted man or woman; by helping their families, you help the troops. Instill a sense of patriotic pride in your children and grandchildren. Teach them the lyrics to a patriotic song. Fly the flag every day the proper way. Wear a flag pin on your clothing. Proudly sing the national anthem or recite the Pledge of Allegiance at sporting or school events. Attend the parades and events organized to salute our armed forces. Affix an “I Support The Troops” bumper sticker to your vehicle. Read or watch the news and remain informed about our current military involvement. Volunteer at a veterans hospital or care center. Help a scouting organization or other children’s group make holiday cards or letters of thanks to send to veterans and enlisted troops. Donate to one of hundreds of charitable foundations dedicated to veterans. Contact your local American Legion or VFW for even more suggestions.

Well the time has arrived—we’re counting the weeks until the holidays are upon us, but soon we will be counting the days, then the hours…

We’ve heard it said that time is the enemy. We worry that time is ticking away, that time is going to pass us by, that there’s not enough time in the day. We’re advised to make good use of our time, when we have too much time on our hands. Things come to us in due time, and there’s no time like the present. We’ve found that time flies and time heals. The list of clichés is practically endless. The passing of the weeks, days, hours and minutes is definitely a predominant theme in our lives.

That’s why I think a clock makes a great gift. You can find one that fits any decor, represents any theme, makes any sound. Whether your friends and family are fond of classic icons, sports memorabilia, kitschy collectibles, or retro fun designs, you can find a clock to fit their personality and style.

Americans Soar Throughout Aviation History

Sixty-two years ago, a test pilot with the right stuff changed the future of aviation forever. On October 14, 1947, Chuck Yeager flew a Bell XS-1 off the Mach scale for 18 supersonic seconds, and America entered its second great age of aviation.

Just as the Wright Brothers’ first flight in 1903, and Lindbergh’s historic 33-hour trans-Atlantic flight to Paris in 1927, Yeager’s accomplishment was a thrilling milestone in American aviation that set the stage for further and faster things to come. Even before Yeager’s feat, the second World War was fought in the skies as the military continued to develop warplanes that eventually led us to victory. It wasn’t long before our thoughts turned to space flight and again, Americans recorded another first when Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. This month also marks the anniversary of John Glenn’s return to space as a Discovery shuttle astronaut, nearly 4 decades after he became the first man to orbit the Earth, making him the oldest person to travel in space. We can’t forget the Concorde of the early 70s, with an average cruise speed of 1,330 mph!

Another history-maker, Amelia Earhart, is the subject of a film now entering theaters. And whether they can be considered movie material or not, many of us can count one of our relatives among the hundreds of heroes that took to the skies last century. Some famous and some not-so-famous, all making their mark in the history of aviation as pilots, flight crew, ground support, scientists and researchers, astronauts, and more. Who knows what astounding feats Americans will accomplish, and how many amazing frontiers will be conquered as the century progresses? It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes, by motivational speaker Les Brown: “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”

The Beatles Invade America One More Time!

With all the hype surrounding the release of the new Beatles version of the Rock Band™ video game, it feels like Beatlemania all over again!

It seems like only “yesterday” that the 4 lads from Liverpool set foot on U.S. soil to the sound of screaming legions of fans—myself among them—a sound that lasted for about 7 more years. Beginning with Love Me Do in 1962, and concluding with 1970’s The Long and Winding Road, I was hooked for life.

For me, the Beatles were more than just musicians; they were the soundtrack of my adolescent life. The news that they were breaking up was nearly more than I could bear. How could they do this to me? I felt connected to them, almost believing that I was as much a part of their lives as they were of mine. Over the years, my emotions ran the gamut--I was jealous when Paul married Linda; hopeful when Ringo launched his solo career; baffled when George embraced Eastern culture; and completely devastated when John was murdered. My dream (and that of every other fan) of the group someday reuniting was destroyed forever. We would just have to be content with what they left us. But oh, what they left us!

I needn’t have worried, because they have managed to remain current, never far from the limelight all these years later. Their music has lasted past vinyl, beyond
8-track and cassette, through CD to mp3 downloads, and now a video game! Plus, I get to add one more emotion to my list: excitement, thanks to the wonderful selection of Beatles collectibles and memorabilia Betty’s Attic has for fans like us.

Woodstock – Music, Mud, and Memories of 1969

Pouring rain and ankle-deep mud. Thunder and lightning. Lack of sanitary facilities and first aid. Shortage of food and water. New Orleans after the hurricane? No—Woodstock in 1969! The Woodstock Music & Art Fair began as a small-scale commercial venture, but quickly escalated into what has been called one of the most pivotal moments in music history.

Thirty-two acts signed on for the “Three Days Of Peace & Music,” scheduled for August 15-17. Organizers sold $24 tickets and anticipated about 200,000 attendees. But closer to 500,000 showed up to Max Yasgur’s 600-acre dairy farm, creating crowds and chaos, the likes of which little Bethel, NY, had never seen and for which the entire state was totally unprepared. Yet, with all the potential for overwhelming devastation and catastrophic failure, Woodstock was considered an enormous victory. Nearly half a million people spent those three wet days with nothing but music, peace, and social harmony as their focus—and not one riot or otherwise violent uprising clouded the event.

Forty years later, we’re still talking about the impact Woodstock had on pop culture. Authentic collectibles command high prices, and the bohemian fashions of the day are once again back in style. Since the release of the first concert album in 1970, several more have been produced, including additional musical performances, crowd noises, rain sounds, and more—so generations of us who weren’t there can experience it as if we were. Taking a trip back in time has never been so easy!

Off To See The Wizard Of Oz? Be Sure To Stop In Wamego!

It’s been 70 years since a tornado dropped young Dorothy Gale into the magical Land of Oz, out of the pages of L. Frank Baum’s book and onto the silver screen. The official premiere of Victor Fleming’s The Wizard of Oz was at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on August 15, 1939, where it received mostly positive reviews.

The story of the girl from Kansas has captured many hearts, but none so much as those belonging to the residents of Wamego, Kansas, who have “adopted” Dorothy and turned her into a virtual way of life. Oz-themed names are prevalent all over town, from street signs, to restaurants, hair salons, the local winery, and more. The town’s highlight is the annual “OztoberFest” festival, which boasts a special stage production and autograph sessions featuring original Munchkin actors and actresses.

Thanks to its obsession with all things Oz, Wamego is now a bona-fide tourist town, with its own museum that displays 25,000 pieces of Oz memorabilia throughout the year. Items include life-sized replicas of the film’s characters, pictures of Judy Garland from her Dorothy days, numerous props and posters from the movie, and a pair of ”ruby” slippers crafted of Swarovski crystals.

But, as beloved as this unforgettable film classic has become, it took home only one Oscar and one special award recognizing Judy Garland’s performance as a juvenile actress. That year, the Academy Awards were dominated by another 1939 Victor Fleming film you may remember: Gone With The Wind. But that’s another story for another day, my dears!

Our Moon Landing Memories Are 40 Years Old!

Do you remember where you were when the pictures of Neil Armstrong taking his first steps on the surface of the moon were beamed back to Earth?

I was babysitting my younger cousins. The television was on, but I was the only one watching. With 3 rambunctious urchins bouncing around on the sofa behind me, I sat on the ottoman in front of the TV, transfixed by what I was seeing. I clearly remember those fuzzy images on July 20, 1969, when Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong emerged from the lunar module, taking “one small step for man” in the Sea of Tranquility—that history-making “giant leap for mankind.”

It was something the average person never thought they’d see outside of a sci-fi movie. But the thrill seemed to wear off so soon. With NASA sending off mission after mission to study the moon, I don’t remember hearing much about the 6 additional landings that took place. I’m sure I’m not the only person who didn’t realize that in the 3 years following Apollo 11’s milestone, 24 more real-live American spacemen traveled to the moon, 12 actually walked on its surface, and 3 made the trip twice! In fact, the Apollo 13 failed moon landing captured our attention only when we discovered the 3 astronauts aboard were perilously close to not making it back to Earth. But we all know how that turned out!

So here it is, 40 years later; and with all the scientific, engineering and technological advances made around the world, no other country has managed to accomplish what the U.S. accomplished between 1969 and 1972. Pretty impressive, isn’t it? You might even say it’s “out of this world!”

As We Mourn The Legendary Michael Jackson

On June 25, music fans around the world were shocked and saddened by the devastating news that pop icon Michael Jackson had unexpectedly passed away.

Michael had been singing to us since he was 9 years old, fronting his family singing group, The Jackson 5. His appeal was instant, and the group was tremendously successful.

For those who thought the passing of Elvis Presley in 1977 meant the world would never see another King with the vocal talent and pure magnetism capable of attracting throngs of adoring fans, they only had to wait 2 more years until Jackson released Off The Wall in 1979. His fifth solo departure from The Jackson 5 was regarded as a major breakthrough album, receiving critical acclaim and marking Jackson’s transition from talented little boy into a masterful musical force.

Whether you were into disco, funk, soul, jazz, pop or rock, Michael had a song for you. His impact on modern music was astounding, delivered through album releases, television appearances, globe-spanning concerts, and his brilliant videos on the fledgling MTV. He turned the music video into conceptual art, and introduced new dance techniques such as the robot and moonwalk. Thriller, released in 1982, instantly became—and currently remains—the best-selling album of all time. Seven of the album’s nine songs, including Beat It, Billie Jean, The Girl Is Mine, PYT (Pretty Young Thing), Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ and 2 more, reached Billboard’s top 10, and the album won a record-breaking eight Grammy awards in 1984.

Michael Jackson’s multiple successes over the next decade cemented his image as a cultural icon. He was one of those rare entertainers whose talent spanned generations and genres, and he will forever be known as the King of Pop.

It’s summer, it’s Florida, and it’s HOT! While so much of the country looks forward to participating in outdoor activities this time of year, here in the south we do our best to stay inside. We live in air-conditioned houses, drive air-conditioned vehicles, work in air-conditioned offices, shop in air-conditioned malls… Oh, there are those who enjoy working up a good sweat, but for the most part, the way to get through a typical summer day in these parts is to sit back and refresh yourself with an ice-cold soft drink.

A Star Trek For Every Generation

When Gene Roddenberry created the sci-fi television series Star Trek in 1966, he couldn’t have known the immense impact and tremendous popularity the show would have on pop culture! The series ran for only 3 seasons, but developed its strong following through the reruns. The series spurned 5 television series, and inspired 11 full-length feature films, with a 12th in current production. The most recent release in May 2009 gave us a new and alternative look at how the crew of the USS Enterprise first came together to boldly go to galaxies unknown. The movie is proving to be a commercial success, garnering Trekkie fans from yet another generation.

What is the secret of Star Trek’s appeal? Why have we been so compelled to watch these characters spend light years traveling the multiverse, confronting, battling, and befriending other species, then moving on to the next frontier? The episodes were like mini morality plays, as current now as they were in the 60s: man’s physical battle between good vs. evil, and his inner conflict between emotion vs. logic. Almost every storyline could have been subtitled “Live and Let Live—or, Why Can’t We All Just Get Along in Deep Space?” But social commentary aside, generation after generation of loyal viewers would never be drawn to watch a sci-fi program about different species “just getting along!” Therefore, the battle rages on—could it possibly last another 45 years? We hope so!

Whenever I hear the lyrics to the Queen anthem, We Are The Champions: “You brought me fame and fortune and everything that goes with it, and I thank you all. But its been no bed of roses, no pleasure cruise…” I always think of Marilyn Monroe. Born on June 1, 1926 to an unmarried, mentally-ill mother, she bounced around foster homes from the time she was just a little girl until she was 16 years old. She had the proverbial deck stacked against her from a very young age, yet she never let it keep her down. She was always picking herself up, dusting herself off and reinventing herself, eventually becoming one of the most famous people the world has ever known.

What was it about Marilyn Monroe that has kept the memory of her persona alive, almost 50 years since her passing? She was not the most respected of actresses. She wasn’t a particularly gifted singer. Obviously she was unlucky in love, having been divorced 3 times. Both her personal and professional lives were subjected to harsh criticism at every turn. But despite all that, Marilyn remains an icon, remembered not just for her alluring sex appeal and her talent for entertaining, but also for her vibrant spirit, her determination to beat the odds, chase her dreams, and maintain her passion for life. She once said, “I just want to be wonderful.” To her credit, Marilyn tried to keep in perspective what she felt her fame really was – a fleeting moment in the spotlight. Little did she know, her moment would be anything but fleeting. And she was indeed wonderful.

Marilyn has influenced many of today’s top talents. You only have to look as far as Madonna’s platinum-blonde phase, Britney Spears’ Rolling Stone shoot, Christina Aguilera’s album cover art, Lindsay Lohan’s fashion line, and Megan Fox’s tattoo to see the impact Marilyn still carries in Hollywood. Her untimely death, all alone at age 36, was such a tragic end to her stellar life. The star is gone, but the bright light she cast has yet to fade. May it continue to shine!

Celebrating 100 Years Of Kewpie Cuteness

In this age of technology, do little girls still play with dolls? What’s the latest doll craze these days? What kind of tricks do they do now? Once a doll-loving little girl myself, I owned (and coveted) dolls that cried, wet, talked, walked, crawled, slept, sang, grew hair, grew taller, and I can’t even remember what else. For the most part, they were just passing trends and didn’t really have much staying power. But there is at least one very notable exception.

One doll has never been out of production since she was first created back in 1913. I’m talking about Kewpie, of course! Created by Rose O’Neill, Kewpie started life as an illustration that appeared in the pages of Ladies’ Home Journal in 1909. The charming drawings of the smiling winged cherub were introduced as paper dolls in 1912 and were so popular, it was decided that Kewpie should become a real doll. A year later, the first Kewpie doll was produced. Over the years, Kewpies have been crafted in bisque, soap, celluloid, Wedgewood, porcelain, plaster composition, cloth, and vinyl. They have been produced in sizes ranging from 1” tall to over 3 feet tall. But through all the incarnations, Kewpie has remained popular without having to do any “tricks” – no wetting, no crying, no walking. So what is the appeal? The pointy little topknot of sculpted hair? The chubby baby-like features? The impish grin and side-glancing eyes? I say, all of the above! Amazingly, Kewpie has captured the hearts of collectors all over the world for a century, just by being cute! Now I ask you, what other doll can lay claim to that feat?

Humor Goes Down In Smithsonian History!

Last week, comedian Carol Burnett and fashion designer Bob Mackie donated a costume from “The Carol Burnett Show” to the National Museum of American History. The dress joins other culturally significant items on display, such as the ruby slippers from “The Wizard Of Oz,” Irving Berlin’s piano, Muhammed Ali’s boxing gloves, and the signpost from “M*A*S*H™.”

The costume donated is none other than the curtain dress used to parody Scarlett O’Hara’s iconic green velvet dress from “Gone With The Wind.” In the classic film, as you know, Scarlett fashions her fabulous dress from drapes she pulls down from the windows.

Carol Burnett’s Mackie-designed dress was worn in the comedy sketch entitled “Went With The Wind,” first shown on her variety show on CBS in 1976. When Burnett descended the staircase, the drapes of her dress were still attached to a brass curtain rod across her shoulders! The hilarity of the scene reached it peak when Burnett said, “I saw it in a window and I had to have it!” This scene reportedly got one of the longest recorded laughs on television. If you’ve seen the sketch, you’ll remember how hysterical it was. If you’ve never seen the sketch, well, now you’ve missed a part of history!

Museum Director Brent Glass said of the dress, “… (it) is a symbol of the nation’s rich comedic history.” What a great country we live in when our history museum includes artifacts from the best moments in comedy, don’t you agree?

Our Fascination With Trains Is Still On Track!

While visiting relatives this past holiday weekend, I was captivated by one of my young nephews who was absolutely fascinated with a miniature train set. Our elderly uncle had brought it out for the little guy to play with, patiently helping to set it up and get it working. He shared with us that it had always been his favorite childhood possession. Together, the two spent hours placing miniature figures and foliage here and there, and watching the train travel the tracks; backward, forward, in and out of tunnels. It made me think of my favorite cousin Dennis and his elaborate model train setup in his family’s basement,. My sibs and I spent many hours down there, watching the locomotive puff along, loading and unloading its cargo, then sending it back out on its way around the track. Looking back, the fact that Dennis let us play with his amazingly cool train set was probably the reason he was our favorite cousin!

Another fond train memory I have is class field trip taken in elementary school--a scenic ride on the Arcade & Attica railroad across western New York. Entering the historically-preserved station and bouncing in the seats of the antique steam locomotive was like traveling back in time. It was inspiring and exciting to realize that we were riding along the very same rails that were spiked down by pioneers in 1881.

Trains are such an integral part of our country’s growth. Can you imagine the excitement back in 1859 when the first train to cross the mighty Mississippi River made its way across the bridge from Rock Island, Illinois to Davenport, Iowa? And ten years later, in Promontory, Utah, when the Union Pacific tracks were joined to the Central Pacific tracks--the 2,000-mile journey that once took overland pioneers 4 to 6 months was reduced to 6 days!

Hopefully, in another 150 years, family gatherings of uncles, cousins and nephews will still be appreciating and sharing the rich history and timeless adventure of trains.

I Read The News Today, Oh Boy…

Here’s something I was thinking about… Being that there are only so many days in the year, it stands to reason that on each day, somewhere in history, something really inspiring, significant, or amazing took place. Take any random date--April 15, for example.

In 1947, Jackie Robinson broke Major League Baseball’s color line when he was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers to wear #42. He scored the winning run in his debut, further securing his spot in sports history. In a fitting tribute, Jackie Robinson’s number was retired on April 15, 1997.

April 15, 1865 is the day that our 16^th president, Abraham Lincoln, died from the gunshot wound he received the night before at Ford’s Theatre. It was a monumental tragedy during a very turbulent time in our nation’s history.

Over 1,500 lives were lost at sea. Even though the 1996 movie revolved around a fictional romance, it helped us comprehend the magnitude of the disaster.

On April 15, 1955, Ray Kroc opened his first McDonald’s restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois. Today, there is hardly a person alive in the civilized world who isn’t familiar with the name McDonald’s, the golden arches, or the phrase, “Would you like fries with that?”

The song “We Are The World,” recorded by USA for Africa, reached the #1 spot on Billboard Magazine charts on April 15, 1985. Almost 25 years have passed since more than 40 of the biggest celebrities in the music industry lent their voices to the recording, which raised over $60 million for famine relief.

And that’s just ONE DATE on the calendar! (P.S. - If, after reading this, the only thought that comes to your mind on April 15^th has to do with taxes, you need to bring a little more “retro” excitement to your life—and I know just the place to find it!)

Celebrating The Soundtrack Of My Life

On my way into work today, I was listening to the radio and singing along to an old favorite by The Beatles. After the song, the DJ remarked that during this week in 1964, the Beatles broke Elvis Presley’s 7-year record for most hits on Billboard's Hot 100 simultaneously. In 1956, Presley had nine songs on the Hot 100. The Beatles added a 10th hit, then managed to top that on April 11, when they occupied 14 slots on the chart! Can you imagine? Most people would be hard-pressed to write and record one song; or to have that song reach the Billboard charts. To have 14 on the chart at the same time—well, it continues to astound me. This week I’m celebrating their amazing feat with a few collectibles that fans like myself are sure to love.

Having grown up during The Beatles’ heyday, their music is an integral part of the soundtrack of my life. Lennon’s edgy lyrics and McCartney’s beautiful melodies combine to remind me of good friends I made and great times I had, making them seem for a moment or two, just as vivid as they were then. Isn’t it strange how people we’ve never met can have such a profound impact on our lives? Our favorite movie actors, television personalities, music icons… all literally strangers to us, yet they are firmly anchored in our fondest memories from the timelines of our own personal histories. This is what makes memorabilia and retro collectibles so precious to us—these pieces of our past that we take out, dust off, and warmly embrace with our minds before tucking them away for another day.
